Join Us in Creating a New Community Garden and Walking Path

Our Vision: Inspired by Dean Barlese’s father's legacy, our community garden initiative aims to preserve traditional agricultural practices, promote health, and foster community resilience. We envision a thriving garden of traditional foods and medicinal plants, integrated with a ceremonial space, educational programs, and sustainable practices.

Our Story: Dean Barlese’s father dreamed of a community garden to reconnect people with Paiute heritage, ensure food security, and improve health. This project honors his vision and expands it to include a walking path and medicine garden, enriching our cultural heritage.

Celebrating Our Partnership with Nellie Davis and Sawabemuhano:

We’re excited to have Nellie Davis, the founder of Sawabemuhano, leading this project. Nellie’s hands-on approach to traditional herbalism and her dedication to community wellness make her the perfect partner. Her knowledge and passion ensure this initiative aligns beautifully with Sawabemuhano’s mission. Working together, we’re creating a space that brings our community closer to its roots and each other.

Our Goals and Impact:

  • Cultivation of Traditional Foods and Medicinal Plants: Grow traditional foods like chokecherries and varieties of berries alongside native medicinal plants.
  • Walking Path for Wellness: The walking path will provide space for physical activity, connecting different parts of the garden and promoting overall wellness. It will also serve as a serene space for spiritual and meditative practices.
  • Community Plots and Shared Spaces: Individual plots and shared areas.
  • Educational Opportunities: Serve as an educational hub for traditional agriculture and medicinal plant uses.
  • Sustainable Practices: Implement sustainable agricultural methods suitable for our desert environment.
  • Community Engagement: Foster a deeper connection with the land and promote community resilience.

Our Fundraising Goal Is: $15,000

This funding will cover essential expenses such as land clearing, purchasing materials for gardening infrastructure (wood, soil, irrigation systems), and labor costs. Contributing will help create a sustainable community garden and walking path, fostering health, cultural preservation, and community resilience. Your support is vital in building a lasting legacy for our community.
